Blitz to Help Save Monarch Butterflies Aug. 13, 14

Montreal, August 3, 2016 – On August 13 and 14, Canadians are invited to become “researchers for a day” to help identify the monarch butterfly’s breeding sites. The inventory blitz will take place simultaneously all across Canada as part of “Mission Monarch,” led by the Insectarium, a Montréal Space for Life institution, in cooperation with the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale (IRBV), the Université du Québec à Rimouski, the University of Ottawa and the University of Calgary. An easy-to-follow protocol for the general public has been prepared to help participants conduct an inventory of monarch eggs and caterpillars near their home on the butterfly’s favourite food source, milkweed. It’s a fun way to enjoy the summer together with family and friends!

Montreal Holocaust Museum; Is it Suitable for Children?

The year 2015 is the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and its atrocities. Among these atrocities was the genocide of millions at Nazi concentration camps (i.e. Auschwitz). Perhaps this is a fitting time to visit the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Museum (MHM) in the Cote des Neiges district. But is the MHM a suitable place to take young children?

“We generally do not recommend children under age 12 visit here,” explains Alice Herscovitch, Executive Director of the MHM. “But this is not a museum of horrors; In terms of graphic scenes, many Hollywood movies are much more violent than is the MHM. We often accommodate school group visits from grade six and up.”

Spring break ideas 2015; Activities around Montreal

User Rating: / 21

Most Montreal area school kids are out of class March 2-6. So parents and other child-minders should have a few possible outings up their sleeves for things then. Fortunately, many local museums, parks, amusement centres and more have responded by putting on special shows, increasing hours of operation, hiring extra staff, and sometimes lowering admission prices over the spring break. Here is a selection of possible activities and outings to do with kids around Montreal during this time.

What’s New

SkyVenture in Laval gives visitors the chance to simulate parachute jumping inside a 60-foot vertical wind tunnel. Kids four and over are welcome; the maximum age limit is 104! Certain health conditions preclude flying; including pregnancy, excessive weight, and dislocated shoulder problems. Jumpsuits, helmets, goggles, and instruction are supplied. Prices start at $71 for two “jumps” and reservations are recommended.

Families can use the lunch areas and the lockers for their warm clothes before heading outside to enjoy the last days of Montreal's largest outdoor skating rink, which closes on March 8, or drop a line at the Ice Fishing Village near the Clock Tower.

And good news: the $5 promotion is back at the Science Centre! Just add $5 to the price of your IMAX®TELUS ticket for access to all the exhibitions.
